“Oh. They are the people from the South. See on land we are in a war. The South believes in states rights and the North wants to get rid of slavery. Then the confederates fired on a union fort and so the war began." She would probably wouldn't get all that but I tried anyway.
“Oh, yes that was what my husband was talking about. He said that war was a terrible thing.” Maple replied in a worried tone. She reminded me of my mother. My mother used to sing so soft that I could barely hear her, but it always seemed to quickly put me to sleep.

"Yes, I am. I have two merkids that live at home and five that are away living with families." she sighed and then looked intensely into the ocean.
